Equality & Diversity
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is committed to challenging discriminatory behaviour or practices, in order to create an environment where our staff feel safe, secure, are valued; enabling us to provide the highest quality service to the communities we serve.
We recognise that equality and diversity must be at the heart of our day-to-day service delivery. We understand that the production of our policies and procedures, recruitment, training & development and retention of our staff are key aspects of mainstreaming the importance of this area.
Delivering Equality for All – The Scheme
Our scheme – Delivering Equality for All demonstrates our commitment and willingness to ensure that the service we provide meets the needs of all the communities we serve. It has been prepared as part of our commitment to comply with the following pieces of legislation:-
- Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
- Disability Discrimination Act 2005
- Equality Act 2006 (Gender Equality)
- Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003
- Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003
- Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006
- Civil Partnership Act 2004
The aim of the legislation is to encourage public authorities to plan their services in a way that eliminates discrimination and promotes equality of opportunity, by producing a scheme which demonstrates how they will achieve this.
Our approach to the scheme recognises our strategic desire to meet the obligations of the legislation, but is equally matched with clear operational and functional objectives. Our strategy examines all functions of the organisation and assesses their impact on equality and diversity, designating objectives that will enable us to improve performance over time. It demonstrates we are working towards ensuring that all forms of discrimination, harassment are eliminated and the focus is on the promotion of equality and good relations for everyone, through the work already undertaken, as well as action plans for development and our arrangements for monitoring.
