Asking Questions at Public Meetings

Members of the public may ask a question or submit a petition in relation to matters for which the Authority has powers and duties.  A maximum of 15 minutes is set aside at the beginning of each meeting of the Fire & Rescue Authority for answering public questions.

If you wish to submit a question or petition, you must ensure that you submit a copy of your question or petition to the Clerk more than five clear working days before the meeting.

Please be aware of the following procedures for public questions:

  • No supplementary questions may be asked.
  • Any questions unanswered at the end of the time limit will be responded to in writing to the questioner.
  • The Clerk may reject any question which contains defamatory material or the publication of which is likely to be detrimental to the Authority’s interests.
  • The Clerk will read the questions to the meeting in the order in which they are received and they will be answered in that order.  Questions may be edited at the Clerk’s discretion in particular if the question is a lengthy one.
  • Copies of the questions will be circulated with the agenda for the meeting and made available to the press and public.
  • In the case of duplication of questions, in the opinion of the Clerk, only the first received shall be included.
  • Where information contained in a question is contained in any of the Authority’s publications, a referral to that publication will constitute a sufficient reply.
  • A copy of any information supplied to a member of the public in response to their question shall, subject to Section 100A of the Local Government Act 1972, be available for inspection by the press and public.
  • Employees of the Authority are not able to submit questions for Authority meetings
  • Questions and replies will be recorded in the Minutes of the Authority.
