Fatality in fire at Kidderminster block of flats

At 16:20 on Friday 1 March, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was called to a fire on the seventh floor of a high-rise block of flats in Hurcott Road, Kidderminster.

Five fire engines from HWFRS and West Midlands Fire Service arrived swiftly and immediately began fire and rescue operations.

One man was rescued from his flat. Sadly, the man believed to be in his 80s, was subsequently found to be deceased and next of kin have been notified. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

The fire was contained to a single flat and was extinguished quickly using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus.

Around 10 residents were evacuated. Three people including a child were taken to hospital for precautionary checks for smoke inhalation, and were promptly released from hospital with no significant injuries.

The cause of the fire is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

This is a multi-agency incident and the thoughts of the HWFRS are with the family of the deceased.
