Victory for HWFRS!

in News

The rugby match, the first of its kind for Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS), was held at the Droitwich RFC ground along Hanbury Road in Droitwich on Wednesday evening.

Station Commander Dan Quinn, who was also H&WFRS's team captain on the night, explained: "Wednesday's match against Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) was part of the Fire Service Sports and Athletics Association Rugby Union UK Cup. It was the first time our team had competed nationally and so it was a really big event for us."

He explained how the match had looked doubtful at one stage, with Northamptonshire struggling to get a full team together just a couple of hours before kick-off, and the traffic also causing them problems.

He added: "Thankfully several members of the H&WFRS squad volunteered to put on a Northants kit and the game was able to go ahead as planned. "

H&WFRS started fairly slowly, giving away several penalties but then the home team broke the line, and Firefighter Paul Woodhall from H&WFRS scored the first try of the game.

Although Northants worked hard and dominated the scrums, H&WFRS went on to score three more tries, one from Firefighter Martin Fouweather and two from Joel 'Lightning' Skyers, and the game ended with the final score H&WFRS 24 – NFRS 0.

Station Commander Quinn praised both teams for their efforts and passed on his thanks to everyone involved in the event, with special thanks to Droitwich RFC for providing the facilities for the match, and to the Barn Owl pub in Worcester for donating a gift voucher for the raffle.

A total of £160 was raised on the night which will be split between the rugby team, the Young Firefighters Association and the Fire Fighters Charity.
