Love Your Home Week
Representatives from the Fire Service, the Police, the NHS and Neighbourhood Watch will be coming together at a unit in the CrownGate Shopping Centre from Monday 11 to Saturday 16 February to promote safety in the home.
The Love Your Home Week initiative will be set up in an empty shop in Friary Walk, with each participating organisation taking along its own promotional material and literature to hand out. For its part, HWFRS will be promoting fire safety in the home, highlighting the particular risks associated with cooking, and encouraging people to fit smoke alarms and plan escape route in case of fire.
Becky Valender, Community Safety Advisor with HWFRS, said: “Many of the house fires we are called to start in the kitchen and so we take every opportunity to promote safe cooking to the community, particularly to groups, such as older people, who may be more at risk of a fire in their home.
“We hope to demonstrate just how much damage a fire in the kitchen can cause – and that many of these fires are avoidable by keeping an eye on your cooking at all times and by staying out of the kitchen when you are particularly tired, or affected by medication or alcohol.
“We will also be stressing the importance of having a working smoke alarm in the home, reminding people that an early alert from a working smoke alarm can give a few precious seconds to escape a fire, all the more important when a person is less mobile than they used to be.”
She said that visitors to the Love Your Home stand will also be encouraged to book a Home Fire Safety Check to get specific home fire safety advice for their household.
