Bewdley Fire Station has a new recruit thanks to Tesco Express
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) has recently recruited Dan Gale as an on-call firefighter for its Bewdley Fire Station, thanks to the support and assistance from the new Tesco Express store in the town.
Bob Sproat, HWFRS Station Commander for Wyre Forest, said: "We are continually striving to recruit on-call firefighters to give weekday cover in Bewdley. This is often a challenging task as it requires businesses to allow their staff to leave their primary workplaces at short notice. However, we are delighted to be able to work in partnership with Tesco and offer them assistance in other key areas of their business – notably their community support initiatives".
"Initially we saw the initiative as a pilot scheme in Bewdley and liaised closely with the store manager to ensure there was no negative impact on the store's ability to operate normally if a member of staff was released for a short period of time. In addition to this, we were also able to provide the organisation with details regarding the expected number of calls the station attends on average during the week, throughout the course of a year".
"I'm immensely pleased to confirm the initiative is now well underway and has resulted in positive outcomes for all concerned – particularly the local community. Given our very positive experience, we would also like to identify other businesses in the area that may be able to offer similar assistance".
Store Manager, Leighton Pickett added: "We are always finding ways of supporting our local community and it has been a pleasure to be involved in this initiative. It has shown that the partnership can work with a small amount of employees and hopefully we will be a role model for other local businesses to follow."
He added: "Furthermore, it has also been a fantastic opportunity for a member of staff to do something that he has always wanted to do whilst working for Tesco."
