Electric blanket testing offered in Redditch

in News

The event, which aims to provide information on a range of services available to older people living in the Redditch district, will also be supported by Redditch Borough Council Community Safety Team, the PCT, Age Concern and other local agencies, as well as the Fire Service.

While the main event will run from 10am to 12.30pm on Thursday 24 February at the Town Hall in Alcester Street, electric blanket testing will be available between 10am and 12 midday only.

Anyone wanting to have their blanket safety checked is advised to book an appointment in advance by calling 01562 512612, although there will also be a drop-in facility available on the day for those who are prepared to wait.

Julie Udall, Community Safety Advisor at H&WFRS, said: "Thankfully fires involving faulty electric blankets are rare in Redditch but we hope to keep it that way by regularly offering these free safety testing sessions.

"We'd urge older people in particular to come along to the event to have their blankets safety checked. Replacement blankets, one per household subject to availability, will be offered for any blankets deemed unsafe."

She urged anyone who could not get to the session to take a few moments to check the condition of their own electric blanket, looking out for any signs of wear and tear. She warned that a blanket should not be used if it has a worn lead or missing connections, any exposed elements, scorch marks or water damage or any creasing or folding.

She recommended keeping hold of the manufacturer's instructions for using the electric blanket as these will advise how to use and store it safely, thus prolonging its life. Ideally electric blankets should be tested every two years and replaced every 10 years.

She also reminded people not to take hot water bottles or drinks to bed with them if they have an electric blanket on their bed - as any leaks or spills on the blanket could result in a dangerous mix of water and electricity.
