Garage Fire Closes A38

At 17:14Hrs on Saturday March 20, 2010, Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a garage fire, at Spa Cars next to a petrol station on the A38 just off the M42 junction 1, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.

Two fire crews (one whole-time, one on-call) from the local fire station in Bromsgrove were promptly on scene followed by further crews from Droitwich, Hereford, Kidderminster, Malvern, Redditch, Sudley, Stratford, Stourport and Worcester. In addition to fire appliances, an aerial ladder platform, a command unit and a water carrier were also brought in.

On arrival firefighters found a heavily smoke logged workshop with acetylene cylinders inside. Due to the potential for explosive risks West Mercia Police evacuated nearby buildings, whilst fire crews used breathing apparatus and jets to bring the fire under control and prevent the spread of fire to nearby properties. Throughout the night over 80 firefighters were brought in to tackle the blaze (including specialist and relief crews).

The two storey building used as a garage and workshop was destroyed along with a number of vehicles.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
