Breathing Apparatus Challenge

in News

The HWFRS Breathing Apparatus (BA) Challenge 2012 was held at Oldbury Fire Station on Saturday 16 June, and five teams from the Service took part (Worcester Retained, Redditch Retained, Droitwich & Worcester Wholetime, Whitchurch & Bromyard Retained plus a team of Flexi Officers).

Those participating were faced with a fire in the bedroom of a three-bedroomed house and reports of four people missing. Each team of five had 30 minutes to rescue the family and bring the fire under control, calling upon all of their BA and firefighting skills as they did so.

National BA Assessors attended to assess the Challenge and ensure impartiality, while volunteers from the Service also took part, assisting with role play.

All teams demonstrated an extremely high standard, and while the competition was very close, the Wholetime team from Droitwich and Worcester were declared the eventual winners, with the Flexi Officer team coming second.

The winning team will represent Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service at the National BA Challenge, which will be held at the Fire Service College in Moreton-on-Marsh in Gloucestershire later in the year.
