Demolition work due to start following High Town fire

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) say that damping down is continuing at the site of yesterday's (Thursday 21 October) fire in High Town, Hereford.

Fire crews from Hereford and Droitwich are still at the scene, along with the Aerial Ladder Platform, also from Hereford.

Station Manager Adrian Thompson from HWFRS, currently lead fire officer at the scene, said: "One shop was severely damaged by fire and is structurally unsafe, and controlled demolition of this section of the building is due to start shortly."

He confirmed that there would be a coordinated approach to the demolition work, with fire officers working alongside building control, building surveyors and the demolition company to progressively and systematically demolish the front face of the worst affected building.

Acknowledging local concern for Booth Hall and other buildings in Hereford High Town of heritage interest, he added: "We want to reassure people that every care will be taken to protect the front facades of these buildings as the demolition gets underway, and fire officers will be at the scene throughout the day to continue damping down and tackling any hot spots."

Other agencies, including the police, are also still in attendance, and Jesse Norman MP, Member of Parliament for Hereford and South Herefordshire, is due to visit the scene of the fire at 10.30am this morning (Friday 22 October).
