Firefighter (Retained Duty System)

Door Procedure

Road traffic collision

Pump Drills

We would like to recruit more Firefighters, especially in our more rural areas. The sense of achievement and job satisfaction that can be gained is unique, so, if you are the sort of person who wants to give something back to the community in which you live and are aged 18 or over, why not consider becoming one of our Firefighters? As a Firefighter you will play a key role within our Service, and will face a wide range of challenges. You could be involved in rescuing someone from a burning building, or a trapped motorist from a vehicle.

Working Hours
You will be expected to attend regular training sessions for a couple of hours a week, and to be available for a reasonable amount of call-outs. We are particularly keen to hear from you if you can be available during daytime working hours. We do recognise that you will have other commitments and if you can't be on call, you can 'sign off'. The nature of the job means that it can often fit around other responsibilities, such as childcare.

Rewards
As a trainee Firefighter you will receive an annual retainer of £2,090. You will also be paid £9.54 per hour for attending incidents and training, plus £3.65 disturbance payment for each call-out.

Personal Qualities
Your personal qualities are important to us. We are looking for enthusiastic men and women from all walks of life, with common sense, compassion, sensitivity, creativity, discretion and diplomacy. You will also need the ability to work as part of a team.

Availability
You must either live or work within 4 or 5 minutes of one of our Fire Stations, in order that you can attend quickly in the event of an emergency call-out. Because you will be 'on call', you must be flexible and available at short notice. You must also be available to attend weekly training sessions.

Training
All trainee Firefighters undergo a training programme of an initial 3 weeks upon commencement of employment and then 3 remaining modules over an 18 month period.

Probationary Period
Employment is subject to a probationary period whilst you are in the training and development phase of your role up to a maximum period of three years in accordance with your terms and conditions of employment.  During your probationary period you will be required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of performance.

Equal Opportunities
We aim to provide equality of opportunity in employment and service delivery and welcome applications from men and women of all backgrounds and ethnic groups, including those with disabilities.
