FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do RDS Firefighters get paid?

Yes, by agreeing to commit a consistent number of hours per week you will qualify for a retaining fee. As a trainee Firefighter you will receive an annual retainer of £2,090*. You will also be paid £9.54 per hour for attending incidents and training, plus £3.65 disturbance payment for each call-out.

On average a RDS firefighter can earn £5000-8000 per year.
*Firefighter providing 120 hours cover per week.

How fit do I need to be?

Generally you need to be as fit as possible, but if you take part in sport on a regular basis or have an active lifestyle this is usually acceptable. Applicants will be provided with a preparatory guide to fitness as part of the application pack, and if this is followed you will be suitably prepared.

How close to a Fire Station do I need to be?

There is no set standard as to how far from a Station you can live and/or work in terms of distance only the ability to respond to the Station in five minutes. When responding to the station RDS staff must comply with speed limits and traffic regulations so this must be considered when assessing the time.

What are the working hours?

You will be expected to attend regular training sessions for a couple of hours a week, and to be available for a reasonable amount of call-outs. We are particularly keen to hear from you if you can be available during daytime working hours. We do recognise that you will have other commitments and if you can't be on call, you can 'sign off'. The nature of the job means that it can often fit around other responsibilities, such as childcare.

Can I go shopping or visiting when on call?

Yes, but you must ensure you carry your pager and be within the five minute response time. Of course you cannot drink alcohol while on call or take any other substance that impairs your ability to attend incidents when required.

Do I need any formal qualifications?

No, but you will need to pass the selection tests.

What happens if I cannot do my laid down hours?

We appreciate that things can happen to affect your hours at relatively short notice and there is some flexibility. However, you must inform the Officer in Charge immediately who ensures the hours are covered. Failure to do this could mean that the fire appliance may not have sufficient staff and cannot respond to the emergency call.

What training will I receive?

All trainee Firefighters undergo a training programme of an initial 3 weeks upon commencement of employment and then 3 remaining modules over an 18 month period. You must also be available to attend weekly two hourly training sessions at your Station.

What is the probationary period?

Employment is subject to a probationary period whilst you are in the training and development phase of your role up to a maximum period of three years in accordance with your terms and conditions of employment. During your probationary period you will be required to demonstrate a satisfactory level of performance.
