Fire at funeral directors

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was alerted to the incident at Handley & Hawcutt Funeral Directors in Drapers Lane shortly before 8.20am on Saturday 26 January and two fire crews from Leominster and one from Kingsland attended.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus then used two hose reels to ensure that a fire which had broken out in the mains distribution board on the ground floor of the premises was fully extinguished. Station Commander Neil Pigott from HWFRS said: “The property was unoccupied as the fire started and it was fortunate that it was noticed when it was as it could easily have developed into a more serious incident.”

He confirmed that no one was injured but that there was severe smoke damage to the ceilings and throughout the ground floor of the property.

The fire is believed to have started accidentally.
