Fire in disused building

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was called to St Andrews Street at around 2.15am, with initial reports suggesting there was a bonfire burning out of control behind the Raven Hotel.

Firefighters from Droitwich were quickly at the scene where they established that the fire was in a disused staff accommodation block at the hotel. With further crews from Droitwich and Bromsgrove and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Worcester also attending, the fire was brought under control by 6.45am with four firefighters in breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a main jet used.

There were no injuries as a result of the incident but the first floor and the roof space of the premises were completely destroyed in the blaze.

Station Commander Guy Palmer from HWFRS said: "As the accommodation block was no longer in use, the windows and doors of the property had been secured with steel shutters, making access into the building more difficult for firefighters."

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately, and fire officers are working with the police to investigate.
