Electrical fire safety week 24th to 30th September

in News

The Electrical Safety Council-led initiative is part of the government’s Fire Kills campaign, and aims to highlight the fact that almost half of accidental fires in the home are caused by faulty or careless use of electrical appliances.

Station Commander Alan Haley from HWFRS’s Community Safety department said: “We want to use Electrical Fire Safety Week to make people more aware of the risks of a fire involving electrical equipment or appliances, and to encourage them to give greater consideration to all aspects of electrical safety in their own homes.”

HWFRS’s key safety advice includes:

  • Avoid overloading sockets
  • Unplug appliances when not in use
  • Check regularly for loose or worn wires
  • Ensure appliances are kept clean and are in good working order

SC Haley added: “We’d urge people to take a look around their homes with these safety tips in mind. Many electrical fires are avoidable and so please help keep yourself, your family and your home safe by following this advice.”

HWFRS will be issuing a top tip each day during Electrical Fire Safety Week. Check these out at our Twitter (www.twitter.com/HWFire) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/HWFire) pages.
