What is Dying 2 Drive?

Dying 2 Drive is a free multi-agency road safety scheme aimed at reducing death and serious injury amongst young road users in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Our events involve a realistic road traffic collision (RTC) reconstruction followed by powerful interactive workshops.

The scheme is aimed at Year 11 students who will currently be road users, whether car passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and may soon become young drivers.

Each year, more than 3,000 Y11 students attended Dying2Drive - helping to prepare them to be safer drivers in the near future.

'Dying 2 Drive is a hard-hitting, uncompromising programme for young adults which aims to address the fact that road traffic injuries are one of the leading causes of death for young people. I am hugely grateful to the HWFRS for creating such a powerful experience which had had a really positive impact. I am certain our students will be more considerate and thoughtful road users as a result and that lives will be saved.'

Tim Knapp, Headteacher, Whitecross High School and Specialist Sports College

Dying 2 Drive is part of Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service's Saving More Lives vision to further safeguard the individuals and communities of our two counties through protection, prevention and intervention.

What happens on Dying 2 Drive

The aim of all the agencies taking part is to educate the students – we want them to go home safer passengers, road users and drivers of the future.

The stsudents will hear Lauren’s story – a moving account of the real life experience of Lauren Doherty whose life was changed in a split second.

They will watch a scene which represents a real-life collision and how the emergency services all work together to save life and minimise injuries.

They will go through four workshops and see the consequences of making choices when driving or being a passenger. They will learn about the Fatal Four - seatbelts, speed, impairments and distractions. They will hear how each one has an impact on a collision and importantly, how they can easily avoid them as a driver in the future or a passenger right now. They will see how positive choices you make as a passenger and future driver can keep them and others safer on the roads.

The students will then hear from bereaved parents and the impact that the loss of their child has had on their lives.
