Wake up to the deadly dangers of smoking

Smoking remains the biggest killer in terms of accidental fires in the home. Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging smokers to wake up to the deadly dangers of cigarettes and realise the risks that they pose.

Having a cigarette after you have had a tipple or when you are tired could cost you your life. Falling asleep with a lit cigarette could easily result in a fire and due to the close proximity, would seriously reduce your chances of escaping.

Break those bad habits and ensure that you have working smoke alarms in your home. A working smoke alarm can provide that early warning that could give you the valuable seconds needed to escape. Without one, you are four times more likely to die in a fire.

Follow these golden rules to minimise your chance of having cigarette related fire.

  1. Never smoke in bed
  2. Never smoke under the influence
  3. Put it out, right out!
  4. Never leave cigarettes unattended
  5. Use a sturdy ashtray
