Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is urging all road users to avoid driving into flood water.![]()
Even shallow water can be far more dangerous than it appears — and every year, emergency crews respond to avoidable rescues involving vehicles trapped in floods.![]()
⚠️ Why it’s so dangerous![]()
You can’t see the road beneath. Flood water hides potholes, missing manhole covers, washed-away surfaces, and deep dips.![]()
Just 30cm of moving water can lift a vehicle. Even large 4x4s can be swept off the road surprisingly quickly.![]()
Engines stall easily. A small amount of water entering the air intake can immobilise your vehicle, leaving you trapped.![]()
Currents are stronger than they look. Fast-moving water can knock you off your feet if you exit the vehicle.![]()
Rescuing trapped vehicles puts lives at risk. Crews must enter hazardous conditions to reach you, diverting vital resources from other emergencies.![]()
Flood water is contaminated. It can contain sewage, chemicals, debris, and hidden sharp objects.![]()
🚨 Our advice is simple:![]()
If you see flood water – TURN AROUND, DON’T RISK IT.![]()
Find an alternative route.![]()
Never move road-closed barriers or ignore warning signs.![]()
If your vehicle becomes trapped, call 999 and get to safety if you can do so without entering moving water.![]()
🌧️ Help us keep our communities safe![]()
Please share this message with friends, family, and neighbours — especially during the current periods of heavy rain and flooding.
Preventing one dangerous crossing could save a life.![]()
