Choosing the Right Equipment for those with additional needs
Our Person-Centred Approach to fire safety at home
A holistic, person-centred approach is vital for those who may have additional needs. You can contact HWFRS for a Home Fire Safety Visit (HFSV) to receive advice and necessary fire safety equipment. Note that if you’re a tenant, your housing provider is responsible for fitting appropriate alarms, however we can still offer safety advice and escape planning.

Specialised Alarm Systems
- For those who remove hearing aids at night, alarms with a vibrating pad and strobe light are recommended. These are available through HWFRS.
- Profoundly deaf individuals might benefit from a Bellman’s system, with support from Action Deafness (Herefordshire) and the Sensory Impairment Team (Worcestershire).
If someone has difficulty understanding or responding to standard alarms, consider using Telecare for Assistive Technology.
Telecare equipment is an efficient and effective way of letting others know quickly when help is needed at home and can reduce the need for more intensive support.
Telecare pendants are a manually activated electronic device, that can be worn as a pendant, bracelet or belt unit, linked to a 24/7 monitoring centre that provides support to users at the press of the button. When Telecare linked smoke alarms are activated in an emergency a monitoring team will contact the emergency services.
This technology has now been supplemented by a range of sensors and alarms including:
- Detectors for household hazards, including fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, domestic gas and floods.
- Occupancy activity sensors
- Door, bed and chair Sensors
- Fall or epileptic seizure detectors
- Medication management systems
