Wildfire Safety
Following recent wildfires and ongoing hot, dry weather, we’re urging everyone to take extra care when visiting the countryside and upland areas.
Grassland is extremely dry, and a single spark can quickly start a fire.


General Safety Advice
- Follow any national or local safety advice, warnings and restrictions.
- Never use disposable barbecues or open fires in the countryside during hot, dry weather.
- Take your litter home and help protect natural spaces
- If you see fire or smoke, call 999 immediately.
Prepare your property
- Cut back dry grass, heather, bracken and gorse around your home.
- Trim trees and hedges away from buildings.
- Store firewood, fuel and gas cylinders safely.
Maintain your home
- Use fire-resistant materials where possible.
- Clear leaves and debris from roofs and gutters regularly.
Be ready to act
- Know your escape routes and meeting points.
- Prepare a grab bag with essentials, important documents and medication.
- Plan for pets and livestock.
- Call 999 if you see smoke or fire

Protecting yourself during a wildfire
- Keep windows and doors closed where possible.
- Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity in smoky areas.
- If you experience irritated eyes, nose or throat, coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath after exposure to wildfire smoke, move away from the affected area and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
