  • Has cooking been left on or has the occupier left the gas or electric hob/ cooker on?
  • Have they put something on the cooker they shouldn’t e.g. an electric kettle. Is a locking cooker valve required (gas)?
  • Has food been cooked in the microwave for too long?
  • A person with Dementia may forget they have lit a cigarette and leave it burning.
  • Check if there is any evidence of burn marks or unsafe smoking. 
  • Is fire retardant equipment required?
  • Advise them not to smoke in bed. Is the occupier able to empty their ash tray safely. 
  • Are they able to use their gas fire or heaters safely? 
  • Is there any risk they can trip over these or onto these? 
  • Is the occupier appropriately dressed for the temperature? 
  • Would the occupier respond to standard alarms; would they leave the property and call emergency services? 
  • Do you need to discuss with their next of kin or the professional supporting them about telecare linked alarms?
