Living with Dementia
Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue (HWFRS) offer Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSVs), which can include additional advice for people living with, or caring for those with Dementia. We want to encourage people living with Dementia to continue to live safely and independently in their own homes.

We encourage another member of the family or a regular carer to be present during home fire safety visits. Dementia affects people in different ways, but can result in confusion, memory loss and disorientation. There may be reduced ability to finish thoughts or follow directions. There may be reduced mobility, hearing and sight loss, balance problems and loss of co-ordination. As the condition progresses, the person may struggle to perform familiar tasks, remember recent events or recognise potential dangers. If you have concerns regarding a friend or relative, in the first instance, contact their GP.
Cooking
- Has cooking been left on or has the occupier left the gas or electric hob/ cooker on?
- Have they put something on the cooker they shouldn’t e.g. an electric kettle. Is a locking cooker valve required (gas)?
- Has food been cooked in the microwave for too long?
Smoking
- A person with Dementia may forget they have lit a cigarette and leave it burning.
- Check if there is any evidence of burn marks or unsafe smoking.
- Is fire retardant equipment required?
- Advise them not to smoke in bed. Is the occupier able to empty their ash tray safely.
Heating
- Are they able to use their gas fire or heaters safely?
- Is there any risk they can trip over these or onto these?
- Is the occupier appropriately dressed for the temperature?
Smoke/CO/Heat Alarms
- Would the occupier respond to standard alarms; would they leave the property and call emergency services?
- Do you need to discuss with their next of kin or the professional supporting them about telecare linked alarms?
