The Fire Service has always been in Andy’s life. His dad was a firefighter from 1980 to 1996 at Ross on Wye Fire Station, and Andy had always wanted a job where he could give back to the community.
Andy is a site manager at a local high school and skills learned as an On-Call firefighter such as IOSH courses, Health and Safety and First Aid qualifications, certainly helped him to get this role. Learned transferable skills have been very helpful in his primary employment. He offers 80 hours of cover during evenings and weekends, and has worked flexibly as both a Watch and Crew Commander since 2012.
Andy suggests that anyone interested in becoming an On-Call firefighter should come along to a drill night on a Tuesday evening and meet the crew.
“We can talk about what we do, the application process and how we balance being a firefighter with our home and work lives. We are very approachable and there is always a way to make it work for you.”
