Do you know or care for someone who smokes in bed and uses emollients in Herefordshire and Worcestershire?
A recent fire caused by smoking in bed has again shown how fast a quiet moment can turn into a life threatening emergency. Smoking remains the leading cause of fatal house fires, and the risk is even higher for anyone using emollient creams, which can make bedding/clothing ignite and burn more quickly.
Our ask is simple and urgent:
- Avoid smoking in bed or anywhere you might fall asleep.
- If smoking cannot be avoided, ensure you wash bedding/clothing on the highest and safest temperature possible.
- Don’t sit too close to open fires, electric bar, gas or halogen heaters. Make sure you sit at least 1 metre away.
Expert Advice
“Emollient products are essential for many people, but it’s vital we all understand the fire risks linked to their use. When these creams, gels, or ointments build up on clothing, bedding, or dressings, they can make fabrics ignite more quickly and burn more intensely. Our message is simple: wash fabrics regularly, keep heat sources at a safe distance, and never smoke while using emollients. Small precautions can save lives“
