Major incidents declared as adverse weather conditions continue

in News

The latest message from West Mercia Police:

Major incidents have been declared in Worcestershire and Shropshire as water levels along the River Severn continue to rise.

Severe Flood Warnings, meaning a danger to life, have been issued for Ironbridge and Bewdley due to a risk the temporary flood defences could be overtopped within the next 24 hours.

Residents in affected areas have been contacted directly and advised where evacuation may be necessary.

Across the counties of Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire relevant agencies are working together to respond to the adverse weather conditions.

Earlier today, West Mercia Police Assistant Chief Constable Damian Barratt, chaired a Strategic Co-ordination Group with representatives from agencies responding to the weather conditions.

He said: “We are working closely as partner agencies to ensure all necessary steps are being taken to protect members of the public and their property from harm and damage and as a result a number of properties have been evacuated at Beale’s Corner, in Bewdley and along the Wharfage in Ironbridge.

“We know that for many people who live in the affected areas that they are equipped for flooding, however, public safety is our absolute priority and we would urge anyone who has been advised to evacuate to heed the advice of the emergency services.

“We will continue to work together with a multi-agency response over the coming days to ensure the safety of our local communities and to offer reassurance to those affected.”

Agencies working together include: Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue Service; Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service; West Midlands Ambulance Service; the Environment Agency, Herefordshire County Council; Shropshire Council; Worcestershire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Council.
